    Successful Schedule C Audits

    This course discusses successful practices for Schedule C audits. Analyzing gross receipts and business expenses. Advocate for your client, and negotiate reduced audit scope. Plus, audits gone wrong, audit reconsideration, audit appeals, etc.

    Objectives:

    1. Identify a client's audit issues before the audit starts

    2. Be prepared to advocate for the client and develop a favorable narrative for the client's audit problems.

    3. Develop strong negotiation skill to limit audit adjustments and limit audit scope. 

    4. Understand which issues to fight for and which to give up for a favorable outcome.

    Compensatory Stock Options, RSUs, ESPP, 83b and 83i Elections

    Learn the difference between ISO and NSO stock options, LLC equity benefits, RSUs-Restricted Stock Units, RSAs-Restricted Stock Awards, and ESPP-Employee Stock Purchase Plans. Gain confidence in determining if stock options are ISOs or NSOs and which tax treatment applies. Execute and advise clients on 83b Elections for restricted stock and restricted LLC equity benefits plus the new 83i Election. Tax planning for clients for timing exercise, sale, and AMT issues for benefits.

    1) Understand the various employee stock benefits and their tax treatment. 

    2) Determine which stock options are ISOs or NSOs and what factors affect this determination.

    3) Learn applicable reporting and basis considerations for each type of option or stock award

    4) Evaluate 83b and 83i elections, tax treatment and pros & cons

    5) Develop tax planning and other strategies to maximize benefits for clients.

    • Multi state folks – the family lives here, one spouse lives and works in another state



    Trisha Thomas serves as an Income Tax Research Specialist in Government Affairs at the Idaho State Tax Commission. In this capacity, she is responsible for facilitating committee meetings, documenting processes, and conducting research related to Idaho Statutes.

    She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Prior to joining the Commission, she held various roles in higher education and worked part-time with H&R Block preparing tax returns.
